FACT CHECK: Kristina Conti did not say she would resign over death penalty reinstatement
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

FALSE. A Facebook post claims that lawyer Kristina Conti said she would resign from her role at the International Criminal Court (ICC) if the death penalty were reinstated in the Philippines.

FACT. There is no verified interview, statement, or credible report showing Conti made this claim. The circulating quote card is fabricated.

There are no official interviews, transcripts, or news articles quoting Conti with the statement attributed to her. Conti is a human rights lawyer and ICC-accredited assistant to counsel—not a lawmaker whose resignation from an international role would generate newsworthy coverage.

For context, the Philippines abolished the death penalty in 2006 through Republic Act No. 9346. The country is also a State Party to the Second Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), reinforcing its commitment against capital punishment.

As of October 2025, Malacañang confirmed there were no discussions to reinstate the death penalty, contradicting the premise of the viral claim tied to Conti’s alleged resignation.
