FACT CHECK: No evidence links Gloria Macapagal Arroyo to alleged impeachment bid against Ombudsman Remulla
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

CLAIM: Gloria Macapagal Arroyo is connected or behind a planned impeachment complaint against Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla.

VERDICT: FALSE

FACT: Arroyo denied the allegation, saying she has no knowledge of or involvement in any impeachment effort against Remulla.

The claim circulated in a Facebook post by user Acsije Estavil, which appears to reuse a supposed headline from another Facebook user, Mary Car Pasang Serrano. However, neither post cites any official or verified source to support the allegation.

Through her legal counsel, Joseph Frianeza, Arroyo said she “unequivocally denies” any knowledge of or involvement in the alleged impeachment plan. She added that the reports originated from an unverified Facebook page that published “malicious” and “fabricated” content.

Arroyo also dismissed claims linking her to the alleged impeachment effort, saying that if an impeachment complaint against Remulla were ever filed in the House of Representatives, she would oppose it. “Impeachments are fundamentally political,” she said, adding, “If an impeachment resolution is filed in the House against him, I will vote against it.”

She noted that Remulla had been her political ally since serving as Cavite representative during her administration and had contributed valuable legislative work. She also recalled that Remulla served as an assistant secretary under former President Joseph Estrada before the Second EDSA Revolution.

As of now, no official records or announcements from the House of Representatives show that Arroyo has filed, sponsored, or endorsed an impeachment complaint against Ombudsman Remulla. The viral post is therefore unsupported by available evidence.
