FACT CHECK: January 8 Luzon lockdown claim is FALSE
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

FALSE. A Facebook video claims that a lockdown will be imposed across Luzon on January 8, 2026, due to unrest at Mayon Volcano.

FACT. There is no announcement from the Philippine government, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), or any national authority declaring a lockdown in Metro Manila, CALABARZON, MIMAROPA, or other Luzon areas because of Mayon Volcano.

The false claim originated from a Facebook page called “Nagkakaisang Pilipino TV Newsline,” which uploaded videos on January 5, 2026, asserting that Luzon regions would be placed under lockdown. The video falsely cited PHIVOLCS and urged viewers to click a link supposedly listing affected areas.

The video was AI-generated, identifiable through a Google Veo watermark, and the embedded link redirected users to an e-commerce application, not an official government advisory.

On January 6, 2026, PHIVOLCS raised Mayon Volcano to Alert Level 3, signaling increased volcanic unrest and the possibility of a hazardous eruption. However, authorities only recommended evacuations within the 6-kilometer permanent danger zone, not regional or nationwide lockdowns.

PHIVOLCS reported heightened activity, including hundreds of rockfall events and several volcanic earthquakes since January 1, but no movement restrictions outside the danger zone were announced.
