FACT CHECK: Hindi ginawang santo si Kian delos Santos ng Simbahang Katolika

FALSE. Itinuturing ng mga Pilipino si EJK victim Kian delos Santos bilang patron ng katarungan.

FACT. Walang pangunahing media outlet o anumang opisyal na anunsiyo mula sa Simbahang Katolika ang nagsasabing santo si delos Santos.

Mayroon mang itinatag na EJK Museum upang kilalanin at alalahanin ang mga biktima ng extrajudicial killings, wala namang beripikadong ulat o opisyal na rekord na nagsasabing ang mga biktima ay maaaring maging “susunod na mga santo.”

Muling bumabalik ang ilang imahe at pahayag kaugnay ng EJK sa gitna ng mga pagdinig ng International Criminal Court (ICC) dahil sa imbestigasyon sa “war on drugs” ng administrasyon ni dating Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte. 

Isa si delos Santos sa mga napatay noong 2017 sa kasagsagan ng kampanya kontra droga. 

Ang kanyang pagkamatay ay naging simbolo ng panawagan para sa hustisya at nagbunsod ng malawakang diskurso hinggil sa police operations at paglabag sa karapatang pantao noong panahong iyon. Subalit pagkilala sa kanya bilang simbolo ng hustisya ay iba sa pormal na proseso ng pagiging santo/

Ang pagiging santo ay dumaraan sa masusing at mahabang proseso. Karaniwang kinakailangan ang dalawang himalang iniuugnay sa pamamagitan ng isang pumanaw na taong kinikilalang may kabayanihan — isa para sa beatification at isa para sa canonization — na kapwa kailangang kumpirmahin ng Vatican.
