FACT CHECK: AI-generated photo falsely shows Mount Fuji eruption
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

FALSE. A viral Facebook post claims that Japan’s Mount Fuji has erupted for the first time in centuries, using a dramatic image of lava flowing down the volcano and a thick ash plume rising into the sky. The post, published by a page called “EndTimes News,” presents the situation as breaking news and has drawn strong reactions from users expressing shock and alarm.

FACT. Mount Fuji has not erupted.

Its last recorded eruption occurred on December 16, 1707, and there are no official reports from Japanese authorities or scientific agencies confirming any recent eruption or unusual volcanic activity as of January 2026. The image used in the post is AI-generated, with multiple detection tools flagging it as highly likely artificial.

Sight Engine assessed the image as 89% likely AI-generated, Hive Moderation gave a 99.9% probability of AI or deepfake content, and Undetectable AI found only a 2% likelihood that the photo is authentic.

The post also lacked any disclaimer that the image was created using AI, misleading viewers into believing the eruption was real. Authorities and credible sources continue to emphasize the importance of verifying dramatic disaster-related claims to prevent the spread of misinformation.
